Horse and Hound Wine Festival Is This Weekend!

If you love horses, hounds and wine, then the Horse and Hound Wine Festival in Bedford Virginia might just be for you. This year's festival will be held on Saturday July 9th, 2011 from 11am-6pm at the Peaks of Otter Winery (Johnson's Orchards) in Bedford Virginia. I went a couple of years ago and it was so much fun watching all the horse and dog demonstrations. They had dogs running Agility, Lure Coursing, and Muskrat Races. For all the horse lovers they bring in the Parade of Horse Breeds, Mounted Search & Rescue Team and they also offer the Stick Horse Race for the little ones. This year the entertainment will be The Stone Canyon Band. There will also be a host of venders for your shopping pleasure. All this great entertainment and oh the best part is you can do some wine tasting along the way with a host of  particpating Wineries. Don't worry if you get hungry there is a great variety of Food Venders to choose from.

    Patriotic Opening
Exciting things are coming to the equine events this July 9th. The events are under the direction of Campbell Co 4-H/Bits and Pieces and managed by Danielle Toms of Toms Performance Horses. The girls will be presenting the colors on horseback at noon. There will be a jousting exhibition and a variety of equine demonstrations throughout the day. Carriage rides and pony rides will be offered for a nominal fee. If you don’t come as a horse-lover, you will leave as one.
At noon we will have our Patriotic Opening with the presentation of flags on horseback, pledges and anthems.
This is a very impressive event.

    Lure Coursing
There will be a demonstration of Lure Coursing given by Laura Cormier. Lure coursing is a humane sport which recreates the chase of the hare by the pursuing hound. The "bunny" consists of strips of white plastic attached to a continuous loop line that runs through a
series of pulleys to simulate the zigzag path of a rabbit on the run

    Muskrat Races
This event uses the Jack Russell Terrier's highly developed prey drive to swim through water in pursuit of an artificial lure.
Dogs of all shapes and sizes are invited to swim across the pond in pursuit of an artificial lure. There will be three divisions of competition: small, medium, and large dogs. The winner in each division will receive a trophy

    Parade of Horses
The Horse parade will continue to be a crowd pleaser with a wide variety of horses to be exhibited.

    Kiddie Korral
Supervised activities for children simulating rodeo games and quiet games as well throughout the day. Supervision by the staff and volunteers of Brook Hill Farm Rehabilitation and Rescue

Part of the proceeds will benefit 501-3c organizations that benefit horses and dogs and are The Campbell Co.-- Bits N Pieces 4-H Horse Club, All-American Mutt Rescue, Brook Hill Farm Horse Rescue and Commonwealth Search & Rescue Tasters $20--Gen.
