Open House At Hanging Rock Animal Hospital

Open House Festivities at Hanging Rock Animal Hospital

We took Tallulah over to Customer Appreciation Day at our Vet Clinic Hanging Rock Animal Hospital. They do an amazing job with their open houses. We got to see all the staff's pets and exotic animals. We also toured all the surgery and x-ray rooms. The dog laying on the x-ray table laid there for hours (just to have his belly rubbed by everyone) so his human mommy could show us how things are done at the clinic. He was a sweet boy. His mommy says he loves to play with little dogs. Look at he last photo where he is checking Tallulah out (I am rubbing his belly in that photo although you can't see my hand). His belly felt like velvet...such a good boy! Tallulah did great. She was shaking when we first arrived and then she settled down. It was a good time for everyone. Thank you Hanging Rock for taking care of all of our babies!

How Many of You Would Still Like To Be Doing This On A Monday Morning?

So I go outside early in the morning to do chores in the barn, check all the yards for mushrooms (so the dogs don't get to them) and when I come back into the house this is what I find in my bed. How many of you feel like this on a Monday morning? Wouldn't it be wonderful to just go back to bed and then maybe go to work on Tuesday?

All This Time I Thought It Was A Squirrel Eatting My Sunflowers.

So all this time I thought the squirrels were eatting all of my sunflower seeds off my sunflowers. Every morning I would get up and there would be piles of sunflower seeds right below each flower. Man was I wrong. Check out the photos of this goldfinch having breakfast. Now keep in mind I took these photos from my kitchen window nad this is pretty far away. I zoomed in as much as I could. Check out the third photo (double click for full size photo...yes that is a hummingbird flying right above the goldfinch. What a beautiful morning to wake up to all God's creatures!

Our Beautiful Appaloosa Montana!

Look at this sweet face. He was locked up while the Vets from Virginia Tech where here at Bluebird Farm x-raying Reiny's hooves. He was not a happy camper because everyone's attention was on Reiny. He decided to make a lot of noise so the students and docters from Va Tech Vet school would come over and pet him. It worked! The young medical students came over one at a time and gave him some attention. He is truely like having an 1100 pound Lab puppy!

Bad News For Our Mare Reiny

Today we got bad news that our 26 year old mare Oglala Star aka Reiny has Laminitis in all four hooves. She will need to go on a very strict diet but I figure since all 3 dogs, my husband and myself are on a diet, what's one more in the Lee household. We have a nutritionist from the Virginia Tech Equine Vet School coming to help us out with our mare. It will be a long road for her but starting today she is on Horse Hay Weight Watchers...poor old girl...I totally feel her pain.

Mushrooms are Deadly to Dogs, Cats and Horses!

This time of year please go out in your yards/pastures in the early morning and pick all the mushrooms you can get your hands on. I did mine at 7AM this morning (I did 2 yards and 4 pastures). Yes it does take time and it is a dirty job but you might just save a life. Most of these mushrooms are of the "highly poisonous species". Please do it today and save your pets life!

Who Doesn't Love PUPPIES?

These photos were taken a couple of months ago...these dogs are now over 60 pounds each. They are Harlequin Great Danes. Their mommy is a service dog and she had a very difficult delivery. She had to be rushed to Virginia Tech for an emergency C-section. Everyone is happy and healthy. I wanted to show off their black-grey and white colors by using a black and white special effect. What do you think? Aren't they the cutest ever?

Artistic Renditions of Tallulah!

I love these close ups of Tallulah so I thought I would play with the "saturation key" on Picasa. Kind of Andy Warholish don't you think?

Birds on The Power Lines On A Cloudy Day.

Since it has been cloudy for so many days, I thought I would share my "birds on the line" with all of you. I got lucky the day I shot this because I was in awe watching one bird land and it was like a domino effect. As soon as one bird would land the next bird would move over, and the next bird next to him would move over and so on and so on. I think birds are amazing creatures. They are so delicate but at the same time they are taking care of themselves within 8 weeks of birth. My house finches stay together as a family for about the first year or so. They are a tight knit community. Heres to "the birds"!

Crazy Weather At Bluebird Farm!

We got some crazy weather yesterday (Aug 16, 2010). I have never seen rain come down so hard and so fast. I think we got over 2 inches of rain! Here are some cool photos of the front pasture where there is usually just grass (not a raging creek). Check out the clouds! One was a mini funnel cloud. The horses were standing in a big puddle where the big red horse skippy was splashing everyone. Montana is like a little piglet. He loves to be covered in mud and yes I have so much fun at night trying to brush all the mud out of his coat. I think they really enjoyed get a good down pour. It's like they got a high pressure shower and got to eat at the same time! Horses have such funny personalities!

Shelters Filling Up As Gulf Pet Owners Struggle

Can you imagine having to give up your furry "loved ones" because of a man-made or natural disaster? This is exactly what is happening in the Gulf of Mexico. Folks in that region do not have the time or money to maintain their pets (some are BP workers that are still working 12-20 hours a day trying to clean up the mess). Others are out of work and can't afford the food or medical care that is required for keeping a pet healthy and safe. The last time I was at the Second Harvest Food Bank here in Roanoke I asked them why they didn't have an area for pet food and they felt they would leave that part up to the shelters. With so many folks giving up their pets because of the economy maybe we can convince our local food banks into having a pet food section so folks that are in need don't have to choose between feeding thier families and feeding thier pets. I would be happy to start a pet food drive if we can convince the food banks to add it to their inventory. I know Lexi, Bailey, Tallulah, Montana, Skippy and Reiny (all of my furry babies) are with me...how about all of you?

Tallulah Is Always Finding Interesting Places to Take Her Naps!

After I finished my morning farm choirs, I walked into my bedroom and I fould Tallulah nesting in one of my favorite chairs. I wonder what goes through her little Pughauhau brain when choosing a place to nap. This particular spot before she smushed it down doesn't look comfortable at all. Maybe it was because I was outside doing choirs with the horses and the horse barn is on that side of the house. The blinds are down (that's what makes the lighting so pretty) but she can still hear me doing my choirs. I think as long as Tallulah can hear her mommy pooring out buckets of water, pouring grain into the horse bens, talking to her big babies outside, then she knows it's okay to take a nap and she doesn't have to guard the house. My little 10 lb. guard dog!

The Hummingbirds are B52 Bombers!

I love to watch the hummingbirds of Blue Bird Farm (maybe we should rename the farm Hummingbird Farm in the summertime). They make these cute little squeeks and seem so delicate, that is until they spot each other going for the same humming bird feeder. Then right before my eyes I am back in WWII B-52 Bomber in the Twilight Zone. All of a sudden there are three hummingbirds, in mid air dive bombing each other at 100 MPH! They totally bump each other off and they don't give a darn weather I happen to be standing there or not. I end up diving onto the porch floor for cover! I never knew those little birds were so territorial!

Tallulah's Baby Photos

I couldn't resist. I was down loading some photos of the geese this morning and I ran across these baby photos of Tallulah. She was just so little and so precious. No wonder she has me wrapped around her little paw! Even Lexi has changed so much since Lulah has come into our lives. She plays with Lulah all the time and they run at 100 miles an hour through the entire house trying to catch each other. I am truly Blessed!!!
